I feel like I'm missing something here, or that I didn't quite "get" what happened. I'm aware the ending is probably meant to be ambiguous and mysterious, but I'd like to hear from people brighter than me about what they think went on. Spoilers abound, obviously, so if you haven't read the Annihilation. Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy comes to an end with Acceptance; reviewer Jason Sheehan says it's a maddening, fascinating read that will stay with you long after you finish the last page. Acceptance is a deliciously rich ending to the southern reach trilogy that further cements the whole point of the series. The characters, all amazingly deep and so very human, reach their own conclusions in this storyline. Area X reaches no such ending, and it's doubtful it ever will. And that's a good thing. Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy wraps up exquisitely, completing a journey from mystery to horror to understanding to, indeed, acceptance. All three books in the Southern Reach trilogy were released earlier this year, three months apart, as individual volumes, and then published again in an omnibus in late November.
